What happens during (and after) conscious-connected breathing?

Conscious connected breathing (CCB) is a breathwork technique that involves taking deep, rhythmic breaths through the mouth without pausing between inhalation and exhalation. During CCB, we typically lie down comfortably and breathe in a circular, continuous pattern.

When we engage in conscious connected breathing, we typically experience a range of physical, emotional, and psychological effects.

Here are some possible effects that are common:

  1. CCB can increase oxygen flow into the body, leading to greater energy and mental clarity.

  2. Relaxation: As an after-effect, conscious connected breathing can help calm the nervous system and induce deep relaxation.

  3. Emotional release: As we breathe deeply and continuously, we may become more aware of repressed emotions and feelings. This can lead to a release of pent-up emotions and a sense of emotional catharsis.

  4. Spiritual connection: Some people report feeling a sense of connection to something larger than themselves during CCB, such as a higher power, the universe, or their own higher self.

  5. Increased self-awareness: CCB can help us become more aware of our thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations. This increased self-awareness can lead to greater insight and personal growth.

As we continue to practice CCB, the increased oxygen intake can also have physical effects on the body, such as increased blood flow, improved digestion, and boosted immune function.

We may initially experience some discomfort or resistance as we adjust to the deeper and more rhythmic breathing pattern. However, as the body becomes accustomed to the technique, the breathing becomes more effortless and natural, and by the end, we may experience a sense of calmness and relaxation.

Overall, conscious connected breathing is a powerful tool for self-awareness, reducing stress and anxiety, and emotional healing. While the specific effects of CCB may vary from person to person, it has been shown to have a quick and effective capacity for healing.

CCB is often used in conjunction with other mindfulness practices, such as meditation and yoga, to help individuals connect more deeply with their body and breath, cultivating a greater sense of peace and well-being.
